Dental Implant Stages: From Consultation to Final Crown

Dental implants are among the most successful ways to replace missing teeth, but in most cases they are a journey of several stages rather than a single visit. Knowing the stages helps you prepare and keeps expectations realistic.

1. Consultation and diagnosis

We examine your whole mouth, review your health history and medications, and take X-rays — often 3D — to measure bone height, width and density and locate nerves and sinuses. You leave with a clear plan, timeline and cost.

2. Preparation (if needed)

  • Treating gum inflammation or decay elsewhere.
  • Extracting a damaged tooth and letting the site heal, or placing the implant immediately in suitable cases.
  • Bone grafting if bone is insufficient.

3. Placing the implant

Done under local anaesthesia; most patients feel pressure rather than pain. Mild swelling and discomfort for a few days afterwards are normal and eased with prescribed painkillers and cold compresses. Eat soft foods, avoid chewing on that side and do not smoke.

4. Healing (osseointegration)

The bone fuses with the implant surface over several months, depending on bone quality and location. For visible front teeth, a temporary replacement is often possible during this time.

5. Abutment and final crown

Once integration is confirmed, we fit the abutment, take an impression and the laboratory makes the final crown — usually zirconia — matched to your teeth. The bite is adjusted carefully because implants lack the cushioning ligaments of natural teeth.

Lifelong care

  • Brush twice daily and clean around the implant with floss, interdental brushes or a water flosser.
  • Regular check-ups to examine the gums around the implant.
  • A night guard if you grind.
  • Report any bleeding or swelling around the implant early.

What raises success rates

Stopping smoking, good blood-sugar control for diabetics, following instructions and excellent daily hygiene. Learn more about dental implants or book a consultation.
