E.max or Zirconia? A Guide to Choosing Crown Material

When planning crowns, veneers or a Hollywood smile, patients often ask: "Is E.max better than zirconia?" Both are excellent metal-free materials. The best choice depends on the tooth, its position and the person.

E.max

E.max (lithium disilicate) is a glass-ceramic whose translucency is very close to natural enamel, giving front teeth a lively, natural look.

  • Excellent aesthetics and translucency.
  • Bonds chemically to the tooth, allowing thin veneers and conservative preparation.
  • Ideal for veneers, front crowns and inlays/onlays.

Zirconia

Zirconia is an extremely strong ceramic that resists fracture. Early versions were opaque, but modern multilayer zirconia is far more natural-looking.

  • Withstands heavy chewing forces on back teeth.
  • Suitable for long bridges and crowns on implants.
  • Masks dark teeth after root canal treatment.
  • A good option for patients who grind, with a night guard.

How we choose for each tooth

  1. Position: front teeth prioritise beauty; back teeth prioritise strength.
  2. Bite and habits: grinding favours zirconia.
  3. Colour underneath: a dark tooth needs a material that covers it.
  4. Remaining tooth structure: a healthy tooth needing cosmetic change suits an E.max veneer; a broken-down tooth needs a full crown.

Combining both

A common plan uses E.max veneers on the upper front teeth and zirconia crowns on treated back teeth, with careful shade matching so the smile looks uniform.

Replacing old metal crowns

Older porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns often show a grey line at the gum. Replacing them with metal-free E.max or zirconia is one of the most visible cosmetic improvements. Learn more about crowns and bridges.
