Teeth whitening is one of the most popular cosmetic treatments in Riyadh because it improves a smile quickly without preparing the teeth. But should it be done in the clinic or at home? Each has advantages, and sometimes combining them works best.
How whitening works
Medical whitening agents (hydrogen or carbamide peroxide) penetrate the enamel and break down stain molecules inside the tooth. The methods differ mainly in concentration, contact time and how the gums are protected.
In-clinic whitening
A session of about an hour: the gums and lips are protected with a barrier, then a higher-concentration gel is applied in cycles.
- Pros: fast, visible results from the first session under full supervision.
- Best for: an upcoming occasion or anyone wanting quick results.
- Note: temporary sensitivity may be more noticeable.
Dentist-supervised home whitening
We make custom clear trays and give you a lower-concentration gel with precise instructions for several days or weeks.
- Pros: usually less sensitivity, gradual stable results, trays reusable for top-ups.
- Best for: sensitive teeth and long-term maintenance.
What about pharmacy products?
Strips and whitening toothpastes have low concentrations and limited effect; many only remove surface stains by abrasion. Using any product without an examination risks pain if there is decay, recession or a leaking filling.
Before any whitening
- An examination for decay and gum inflammation.
- Professional cleaning to remove tartar.
- Recording your current shade.
- Knowing that whitening does not change fillings, crowns or veneers.
Who should not whiten?
Pregnant or breastfeeding women, anyone with active decay or gum inflammation until treated, and deep internal stains that may respond poorly — veneers may suit those better.
